These Genius Earrings are Hiding a Grosstastic Secret

Fashion: It’s quirky, it’s fun, it’s whimsical while also serious and very frightening. Whenever I think of fashion, I think of Nina Garcia sternly lecturing me about my love for the color green. Meadham Kirchhoff are a little bit more conceptual. (And gross.) (And Awesome.)

The design duo unleashed a torrent of “punk” looks during London’s fashion week, but the biggest head-turner had to be these earrings that are made to resemble used tampons. Or are used tampons. Bustle’s Erin Mayer says that Vivienne Westwood is probably seething with rage that she didn’t think of this look first (probably so angry she has stomped a hole in the floor, Rumpelstiltskin style). I, on the other hand, am just glad Meadham Kirchhoff thought of this look more than ten years after I exited art high school, because this could have totally been a thing like pillowcase skirts and capes made out of old quilts. And all that rose oil. (Not that I couldn’t have taken more showers and worn less processed silk shirts in 10th grade.)

By themselves the earrings would probably stand out as kind of gross (Mayer points out that even though she’s not down with period shame, she’s also not down with dirty tampon earrings), but as part of a runway look, they’re awesome. And probably a huge draw for bloodhounds.
