Serena Williams, number one ranked tennis player in the world and defending Olympic champion, is out after a loss to Elina Svitolina of Ukraine.
Williams lost 6-4, 6-3 in the third round to the unheralded Svitolina, who is currently ranked 20th and is making her first Olympic appearance. The Guardian reports that Williams appeared to have issues with her shoulder during the match.
She was the all-around favorite to win gold in this event so this loss is especially devastating.
This upset comes on the heels of Williams and her sister Venus’s first-ever Olympics doubles loss to the Czech Republic on August 7. With Williams out of the competition, German player Angelique Kerber is the highest-remaining seed left. She beat Williams in the Australian Open final but lost to her at Wimbledon.
