Ruth Bader Ginsburg Has Better Things to Do Than Attend Trump's State of the Union

Politics

Tonight, President Donald Trump will stand in front of many people and TV cameras to bare his teeth and say some words about the state of our union. If I’m being polite, it will be interesting; if I’m being rude, it’s going to be a fucking disaster. Perhaps recognizing these truths, Ruth Bader Ginsburg is sitting this one out.

CBS News reports that Ginsburg simply has better things to do; in lieu of listening to Trump’s spittle-flecked bunk, she’ll be giving a previously scheduled talk to law students at Roger Williams University School of Law in Bristol, Rhode Island. Ginsburg’s absence isn’t necessarily an intentional act of protest, but let’s put it this way: if it’s a coincidence, it’s a happy one. Given how much of an unmitigated nightmare Trump’s first year in office has been, a few other Democrats are electing to sit this particular spectacle out.

Following Trump’s comments about “shithole countries,” Rep. John Lewis told MSNBC “I cannot in all good conscience be in a room with what he has said about so many Americans. I just cannot do it.” He will not be in attendance. Maxine Waters won’t be there, either. Rep. Frederica Williams has no interest in wasting a perfectly good Tuesday on this shit either; she’s out, too.

In a statement published Monday, Illinois representative Bobby Rush summed it up most eloquently: “This has been the most chaotic, divisive, and incompetent first year of any administration and I will not sit and watch as Trump pretends that he’s off to a successful start. He’s not.”

If you’d like to scream like this armadillo for an entire hour, please tune in to the State of the Union, which will air everywhere there’s a TV, at 9 P.M. EST tonight.
