President Obama Publicly Backs Same-Sex Marriage Laws

Ever since Obama came out in support of same-sex marriage — which he adorably spun as an adorable lesson he learned from his adorable daughters — and called the Department of Justice off defending DOMA, he's been on his gay-marriage game. Which is great, he damn well should be.

Today, he issued statements in both Washington and Maine with just slightly different wording.

For Washington it was:

While the president does not weigh in on every single ballot measure in every state, the president believes in treating everyone fairly and equally, with dignity and respect. Washington's same-sex marriage law would treat all Washington couples equally, and that is why the President supports a vote to approve Referendum 74.

In Maine:

While the president does not weigh in on every single ballot measure in every state, the president believes in treating everyone fairly and equally, with dignity and respect. The president believes same-sex couples should be treated equally and supports Question 1.

The Daily Kos notes:

Three years ago President Obama was silent on Maine's citizen referendum to overturn the same-sex marriage law that had been passed by the state legislature and signed by Democratic Governor John Baldacci. The referendum passed, meaning the marriage law was repealed. It was a shitty day in Maine history, especially since our opponents (NOM, Frank Schubert, the Catholic church leading the charge) ran one of the most dishonest and sleazy campaigns the state has ever seen.

This year, everyone's hoping for much happier results, and also for NOM to fall down a well and for Lassie to leave it there.

Obama's also spoken out in favor of marriage equality in Maryland and Minnesota, the two other states with the issue on the ballot.

It's important to note that not only is Romney against same-sex marriage, he also backs the constitutional amendment to ban it. IN THE CONSTITUTION. This fucker doesn't get the fucking constitution at all.

[UPDATE: Just saw that he also endorsed in Maryland. Now we're just waiting to see if he'll issue a statement opposing the amendment in Minnesota that, if passed, would define marriage as exclusively between a man and a woman. My guess is he did release something, we just haven't seen it in a local paper yet.]
