Leonardo DiCaprio is the king of the Carey Mulligan, Tobey Maguire, Joel Edgerton, Isla Fisher, and Elizabeth Debicki in this just released poster for Baz Luhrmann's Gatsby. This is not going to be a subtle film, friends.

Have we fully discussed whether we're pro a Luhrmann-directed Gatsby anyway? It'll be a spectacular, but will it be too IN YOUR FACE? Then again, it is The Great Gatsby.

Let's.

Here's my take (and bear in mind, I have not read the script so I'm going off what I know of Luhrman and what I've heard)—I don't think I am, and it's not because I'm a purist. But I don't like when more thought has been put into style than substance, and that, I feel, is Luhrmann's trademark. Moreover, based on the trailer, it looks like Luhrmann is using the story to honor his style rather than using his style to honor the story, and story always has to come first. (You can have a totally over-the-top style while honoring story: Tarantino, I think, is wonderful at this.)

Yes, you have a ready-made, great story, Baz, but you should still put at least as much thought into the it as you do into the how you're going to deconstruct it with glitter and Jay-Z.
