Huckabee: I Would Have Pretended to Be Trans to Shower With Girls

It’s been a few days since Mike Huckabee has said anything offensive enough to make me want to jump out a window, so here’s a fresh reminder that he’s one of the worst human beings alive. Huckabee recently called trans-inclusive bathrooms a “social experiment” and once again pointed out that the trans community wants to molest all kids.

In the video above (shot earlier this year at the National Religious Broadcasters convention but only posted recently), Huckabee discusses exactly why he thinks that trans men and women shouldn’t be allowed to use the bathrooms of the gender they identify with. What would it be like, Huck wonders, if your seven-year-old had to use the same bathroom as a trans person? How awful would that be? A seven-year-old girl and a 42-year-old man in one bathroom. That, friends, Huckabee points out, is the complete breakdown of our society and that we’re subjecting children to it is unspeakable.

But that’s not all: Huckabee also reminds viewers that trans people are just doing it for attention and to get access to the opposite sex because there’s really no such thing as “feeling like a woman” if you’re a man. In fact, Huckabee says, if trans people were around when he was in high school, he would have totally pretended to be transgender in order to shower with the girls.

“Now I wish that someone told me that when I was in high school that I could have felt like a woman when it came time to take showers in PE,” said Huckabee. “I’m pretty sure that I would have found my feminine side and said, ‘Coach, I think I’d rather shower with the girls today.’ You’re laughing because it sounds so ridiculous doesn’t it?”

What Huckabee, and other politicians who make this same argument, are ignoring is the fact that being transgender in our society isn’t easy. No one’s been “just pretending” to be a woman in order to gain access into women’s bathrooms all across America. Trans people face discrimination every day, and faking being transgender for the sake of seeing genitals is a despicable and disgusting thing to do. But it also has nothing to do with the actual trans community, because what Huckabee is talking about doesn’t happen. People are just trying to use the bathroom, and a child encountering a trans person in a restroom faces no more danger than any other child in a public bathroom. In fact, the earlier we explain to children that sex and gender are not the same thing, the more inclusive our society will be. But I guess that’s exactly the kind of breakdown Huckabee’s talking about.
