Lee Thompson, better known to the world as the gay "Uncle Poodle" of Here Comes Honey Boo Boo's star Alana Thompson, has become something of an advocate for "queer rednecks" has just revealed that a recent HIV test came back positive.

The 29-year-old sat down for an interview to reveal his status and to promote safe sex. Lee was "adamant" about getting tested regularly. After testing negative in March 2012, and then positive May 2012, he discovered that it was his boyfriend who had infected him.

I later learned he had been HIV positive and was not taking medication and had not bothered to tell me about it. I was advised that I should press charges and, hesitantly, I did. It was the right thing to do.

Ginger, get the popcorn!

I have to say, I am really really conflicted about criminalization of non-disclosure of one's HIV-status. On the one hand, any decent person should reveal his or her HIV-status to someone they are having sex with and/or use a condom every time, and not doing so is beyond reprehensible. On the other hand, prevention of HIV is a two-way street. It's also your responsibility to protect yourself and to either get tested together with your partner or to insist on condom use. We don't require people to disclose other medical privacy issues, and the amount of stigma and discrimination people living with HIV already face makes it extra hard to disclose.
