Good News & Bad News About VH1's Single Ladies

In May, we found out that VH1 would be working on its first-ever scripted series, which would be sort of like Sex And The City, except with actual black people. Now, some additional details have been revealed.

According to a press release, Single Ladies is a comedic drama about three best friends (Three. Not four. It’s definitely not Sex And The City) named Val, Keisha and April. Stacey Dash — whom we loved in Clueless — plays Val, the “an ambitious aspiring fashion mogul who wants to find a true partner.” In other words, Carrie with a drop of Miranda. LisaRaye McCoy (The Players Club, Beauty Shop, The Wood) is Keisha, ” a former video dancer just looking for a rich man to keep her in style.” Whoa! A gold-digging version of Samantha? Charity Shea, who was in Alpha Dog and also played Girl 2 In Car on an episode of Entourage will play April, who is “learning that marriage isn’t necessarily a happy ending.” So she’s the Charlotte.

The series will be set in Atlanta, where the worlds of fashion, music and celebrity collide. Executive producer Queen Latifah may make an appearance, in addition to folks like Eve and Common.

What’s great is that while sister network MTV showcases all-white worlds in The Hills and Jersey Shore, VH1 plans on embracing diversity. And where some reality shows are so fake they seem scripted, this project will employ an actual screenwriter (Stacy Littlejohn, who’s written for The Wanda Sykes Show and Half And Half) and talented director (Tamra Davis). In addition, you’ve got to love that instead of the usual silly young things on shows like The Hills, Gossip Girl and Jersey Shore, Single Ladies focuses on the lives of women with age and experience: Stacey Dash is 44 (no, really) and LisaRaye is 43. All in all, our hopes are high: Women of color who are sexy and successful, Queen Latifah, Stacey Dash: All good news! The bad news? Single Ladies won’t hit the airwaves until summer 2011.
