A Sad Girl's Eulogy for OMG Girlz
EntertainmentWe hardly even knew ye. You may remember the OMG Girlz for such guilty pleasure jams as “Gucci This, Gucci That” (above) and “Where the Boys At?” While these songs are admittedly superficial in nature, what teenage girl doesn’t have such trivial concerns? The sheer sisterhood, goofiness and unapologetic sparkle of this group greatly (sort of) outweighed that.
It all started in 2009 when former Xscape member Tameka “Tiny” Cottle helped assemble the OMG Girlz as a passion project to get Me Time away from T.I. The group originally featured the couple’s daughter Zonnique (aka Star) and her friends Basha (aka Beauty), Lourdes (aka Lolo) and Lil Wayne’s daughter Reginae Carter (aka, duh, Baby Carter). The name stood for Officially Miss Guided. Talk about relatable.
LIKE THEY ALWAYS DO, though, Reginae left in 2010 and Lolo was nixed. In their place came Breaunna, aka Baby Doll, the rapper of the group. The Girlz were often seen rehearsing and learning choreography on T.I. and Tiny: The Family Hustle and Tiny & Toya. Clearly headed for stardom, they opened for the Scream Tour, rocking tutus and every single color of the rainbow including indigo.
Then on March 12 (DOD), they posted this message to their official Twitter account.
WTF Girlz. So you’re just gonna Danity Kane us.
One Twitter user who succinctly sums up my sentiments, responded: “wow this dead ass lowkey broke my heart.” Also: “yall should have at least finished the album we been waiting on ”
Genuinely, I was hoping these girls would overcome the girl group stigma, mature a little bit and evolve into a formidable group that could supply slightly edgier anthems with some bounce to contend with the Fifth Harmonies of the world.
Sure, I’ll “continue to support” you guys “individually.” But NO, not “as much as” I did when you were a group. I’ll do what I can. Good luck I guess.
Now, don’t look at me, don’t bother me, I’m in mourning ;/
