This news come from Variety, which reports that series creator and showrunner Stephen Falk and FX networks have together decided they’ve had enough of Gretchen and Jimmy, and will conclude the matter with the fifth season in 2018:
“Making ‘You’re The Worst’ has been an incredible experience and FX Networks have been dream partners,” said Falk. “I am thankful to have the opportunity to be thoroughly judged whether or not we ‘stick the landing’ – which is a thing people say now that stupid ‘Breaking Bad’ had to end so damn perfectly.”
Shows about awful people abound, but as one otherwise forgettable Tinder date shrewdly pointed out to me awhile back: There are You’re the Worst people, and there are Love people, referring to the Netflix dramedy featuring Gillian Jacobs and Paul Rust. There are plenty of reasons to watch neither, but I have yet to meet anyone who’s seen both that doesn’t have a strong preference for one over the other.
You’re the Worst has its redeeming qualities, like its willingness to examine clinical depression with all the nuance that topic deserves. Still, I am firmly in Camp Love, possibly for the sole reason that Mickey Dobbs is a grimy style icon and someday, I will get these boots, even if it means I have to sell off all my hair and teeth, Fantine-style, to make it happen.
Anyway, season three of Love is expected to be out in early 2018. Sorry about that other show.
