You Ladies Check Facebook Before You Pee

Latest

According to a new study, one third of young women check Facebook upon waking, and 20 percent of us in the middle of the night. And 40 percent aren’t troubled to find a “visibly intoxicated” photo of ourselves there.

An Oxygen Media/Lightspeed Research study of 1605 adults also found, rather vaguely, that 79 percent of women ages 18-34 (from a sample of 1605 adults) are “fine with kissing in photos.” No comparable statistic for men is given in the news reports on the study — the full study doesn’t seem to be online, but am tracking it down.

Why have young women embraced Facebook so vigorously? I’ve argued before that it’s the illusion, or the relative fact, of trust on Facebook — that however much the company tweaks its privacy settings to the great horror of advocates, Facebook offers a sense of security and stability while maintaining internet dynamism and interactivity. Whether all of this compulsive self-representation and brand maintenance is a good thing for women and girls is another debate — but that horse has left the stable.
