Accused abuser and rapper XXXTentacion was shot Monday in Deerfield Beach, Florida. Videos of his unconscious body in his car circulated on social media soon after the shooting.
One of the videos that is circulating shows a man attempting to take Onfroy’s pulse. TMZ reported that “an eyewitness tells us he appeared lifeless with no pulse.” In a series of updates, TMZ reported that he was rushed to the hospital comatose, transported as a “Level 1” patient. The shooting was a possible drive-by and his alleged shooters fled in a black Dodge Journey.
XXXTentacion was one of several Soundcloud rappers-turned-mainstream success stories who was as known for controversy as his music. In October 2016, he was charged with aggravated battery on a pregnant victim, domestic battery by strangulation, false imprisonment, and witness tampering. His ex-girlfriend, Geneva Ayala, detailed disgusting abuse in her deposition and spoke about the alleged abuse in a piece that ran earlier in June in the Miami New Times.
Ayala said that Onfroy beat her so badly, she required surgery to repair nerve damage and a fracture near her eye. Because she could not afford this, she set up a GoFundMe page, which was then pulled after XXXTentacion wrote in to the site, claiming she had falsified her injuries. Ayala’s crowdfunding page was reinstated and has raised over $25,000.
Onfroy pleaded not guilty to the charges, and per Pitchfork, “also denied the charges in various interviews, saying the woman was attacked by someone else and wasn’t pregnant, among other contentions.”
Onfroy was 20.
Update, 5:45 p.m.: TMZ, citing the Broward County Police Department, reports that Onfroy has died. The Broward Sheriff tweeted, “The adult male that was taken to the hospital has been pronounced dead.”
