Kate Swift, whose books Words and Women and The Handbook of Nonsexist Writing how using only masculine pronouns and other words excludes and devalues women, has died of stomach cancer at the age of 87. Thanks to her, many publications have stopped using gendered terminology like “fireman” and “stewardess.”
