For the past three years, Philadelphia’s Factory Girls crew—the DJs Gun$ Garcia, K|Rex, Suga Shay, and Yolo Ono— has thrown a “Galentine’s Day” party around V-Day, because what is this holiday for if not celebrating your best homies. They’ve also dropped fantastic mixtapes to accompany the parties, dreamy, romantic tracks like little candy hearts raining down from the glorious sky (the internet) to remind you that goddammit, you’re loved. Loved!
This year’s tape, which we’re debuting here, is full of dreamy, romantic tracks that will maybe make you want to fall in love, but more likely you’ll want to bop around the room with your best girlfriends—GAL FRIENDS—and have screaming singalong slumber parties while reading their accompanying zine, here, which the Factory Girls also made, because they are fucking awesome.
I die around the 8:44 mark, when Cavalier’s screwed-down take on Teedra Moses’ “Be Your Girl” comes in to jazzy piano stabs right after AG Cook’s tweaker-bubblegum “What I Mean,” but everything is the best. They’re also doing their thing with supporting other women DJs/producers in the field, notoriously boycentric, with tracks by Anna Lunoe, Nina Las Vegas, Louisahhh!!! and more. Also, ugh, that Canblaster Brandy remix? So good.
