Donald Trump, a dangerous and stupid bigot who I do not have the heart to give a silly nickname to right now, renewed his call Monday to ban Muslims from immigrating to the United States. He also said as president he would ban immigration from countries with “a history of terrorism.” So, all of them. All the countries.
Trump made his remarks Monday in Manchester, New Hampshire, after a weekend spent tweeting his usual round of toxic garbage stew about Muslims. The ban, as he articulated it, is deeply vague and yet wholly un-American in its bigotry, its xenophobia, its small, cold-hearted, nasty, ignorant core. From the AFP:
“When I’m elected, I will suspend immigration from areas of the world where there is a proven history of terrorism against the United States, Europe or our allies, until we fully understand how to end these threats,” Trump said in New Hampshire.
“We cannot continue to allow thousands upon thousands of people to pour into our country, many of whom have the same thought process as this savage killer.”
Everyone in the room clapped and cheered.
Trump said too that America has “no choice” but to ban immigration from these unnamed countries, and that it will only resume after a “long security assessment.” He also said the “principles of radical Islam” are “incompatible with Western values and institutions.”
Trump also said the Orlando killer Omar Mateen—whose name he said he “refused to ever say”—was “born in Afghan of Afghan parents who immigrated to the United States.” Mateen was born in New York. The country his parents are from is called Afghanistan.
Trump also said he wouldn’t make any new gun laws, since it would leave “only the bad guys with guns... Not gonna happen folks.” He pledged to meet with the NRA “to discuss how to ensure Americans have the means to protect themselves in this age of terrors.”
Here’s Trump’s speech, more or less in full.
