Today In Leaked Mag Covers: Xtina & Beyoncé For W

Latest

Both of the covers of the new W have leaked. The snapshot of Christina Aguilera‘s cover that was leaked leaves a lot to be desired, so perhaps it isn’t a fair fight, but Beyoncé is clearly winning this one. Lynn Hirschberg’s profile of Aguilera — “The pop diva comes clean about her fall from grace, and how she’s singing her way back to the top” — sounds like it will make for interesting reading, however. But who are we kidding? We’ll totally flip to “Donatella on a dirt bike, Lagerfeld in the tub” first. [AfterLD, ONTD]

The guy responsible for Rihanna’s tour costumes explains himself: “I was thinking of a Fiorucci rave goddess. The bikini is an insane asylum…We fit it four times on Rihanna to make it fit in that incredible way that hugs her curves. Once the fittings were completed we gave it to Tom [Binns] to paint. When you see that thing in person it’s the most incredible fucking thing.” [The Cut]

Ten per cent of the proceeds will go to charity. [WWD]

  • “I don’t think that fashion is institutionally racist in the slightest,” says Alexandra Shulman, the editor of British Vogue. “There have always been black players on the scene — at the moment look at the stylist Edward Enninful, make-up artist Pat McGrath and [models] Jourdan Dunn, Liya Kebede and Joan Smalls, who are at the top of the tree.” Shulman says there are “at least two black figures” who are “in the pipeline” to appear on her magazine’s cover. Did you get that? Two. [Vogue UK]
  • The vast majority of women either like or don’t mind how they look in a bathing suit. Around 18% of women don’t like how they look in swimwear, but 40% are neutral, and 36% like what they see. We like ourselves! We are women, we are strong! Do not oppress us with the lie of the Bikini Body! [USAToday]

  • The third annual Full-Figured Fashion Week, which kicks off in New York June 16, is selling out. Organizers expect more than one thousand people will attend the finale runway show. “Plus-size women in America want fashionable, well-made clothes,” says one. “We have money to spend. and we’re happy to give it to the designers and stores who help us celebrate our curves.”[NYDN]

  • These days, a lot of people complain about how stars don’t have any style. They borrow things their stylists tell them to, wear them, and return them the next morning. Nobody has any originality, and everyone’s too afraid of the nasty, mean bloggers to show any pizzazz! You know who has pizzazz? You know who wears her own clothes to awards shows? Frances McDormand. You’re welcome. [TDB]
  • Jessica Simpson, who may have made a very small fraction of “$1 billion” off the licensed fashion lines that bear her name — those fashion lines, by the way, have yet to gross anything close to the “$1 billion” in annual sales that are often, lazily and incorrectly, attributed to them in stories like this one — will be telling other people how to run their fashion lines on the teevee as part of Elle MacPherson‘s new reality show. • The union that represents over 4,000 Macy’s employees in New York state has voted to authorize a strike. Macy’s, which has earned extremely healthy profits over the past few quarters, is trying to take away pensions from new hires, increase the costs of the employee health care plan, and cut people’s hours. If a new contract isn’t negotiated by midnight on Wednesday, the union may strike. Macy’s already took out an ad in the Times seeking temporary staff — the technical term, we believe, for that is “scab labor.” [WWD]

  • Model Natalia Osikova on New York City: “My Russian friends who came here were divided into two: people who loved the city and people who hated it. People who were born in the Soviet Union, they still have this little feeling that the USA is bad and is the enemy for some reason. It’s like an embedded feeling in our society. I can’t really explain it. It’s just part of the Russian mentality. But I love it here.” Osikova, who modeled in Asia as a teenager, now studies philosophy in St. Petersburg. She should be there right now, in fact, but “actually, it’s been pushed back a little. I was supposed to be in St. Petersburg the first of June, that’s when my classes started. But I got so many jobs. They booked me for Sonia Rykiel, for Rebecca Minkoff [resort]. Then next week I’m shooting the American Eagle campaign for two or three days.” Women’s Wear Daily interjects, “That’s a big deal,” and Osikova agrees — sort of: “It’s good news, but I’m stuck here and can’t go back to classes. This is the dilemma for every model. Your time doesn’t belong to you at all. Your booker can call you at like six in the morning and say, ‘OK, pack your luggage, you’re leaving in two hours from LaGuardia to do a shoot in Seattle.’ That happens all the time but it’s good if they keep you working.” [WWD]
