The YSL Film: Smoking, Ennui, Beautiful Dresses, Gay Romance

Latest

There are not one but two Yves Saint Laurent biopics on the horizon, but this trailer is for the “authorized” version of events — the one Saint Laurent’s partner, Pierre Bergé, approves of. Directed by Jalil Lespert and featuring Pierre Niney as the legendary designer, this film, which is in French, mostly deals with the early days of Saint Laurent’s career; in 1957, he became the head designer at the House of Christian Dior at the young age of 21.

While this is obviously just a snippet, the film looks gorgeous and, frankly, checks off so many items on my list of things i like to watch on screen: smoking, French people in chunky glasses, Paris in the ’60s, fashion, boys making out. I was sold pretty early on in the trailer, and even more so when YSL shouts “laissez-moi tranquille!”
