  • The textile and chemical industries share the dubious honor of being the worst water polluters in China. It takes as much as 200 tons of water to produce just one ton of fabric, and noxious chemicals used in the dyeing and milling processes often pollute waterways. The National Resources Defense Council started a pilot project with five textile firms in China that has led to the development of ten best practice guidelines that, if followed, would both reduce factories’ environmental impact and save them money. Levi’s and Gap plan to introduce the best practices to their suppliers within the year. [WWD]
