The Get Down, the Baz Luhrmann-directed Netflix series about disco and the birth of NYC hip-hop in the 1970s, was canceled on Wednesday.
It is rare for Netflix to cancel an original series, especially after one season. The Get Down was extremely expensive for Netflix, reportedly costing $16 million per episode, and had many production delays.
In a Facebook post Luhrmann wrote about why it’s unlikely that The Get Down will move forward with another season and it sounds like it’s because he really just wants to make movies again:
But the simple truth is, I make movies. And the thing with movies is, that when you direct them, there can be nothing else in your life. Since The Get Down stopped, I have actually been spending the last few months preparing my new cinematic work...
