It’s official: Shia Labeouf has entered the Catholic Church. As a person who spent more than half of my life as a member, I believe the only correct response to this news is: God help him.

“We are thrilled to share that our dear friend Shia LaBeouf has fully entered the Church this past weekend through the sacrament of confirmation!” the Capuchin Franciscans–Western America Province recently announced in a Facebook post. “The Capuchin Franciscan friars are overjoyed to welcome him into the fold and witness his deep commitment to his faith journey.”

Now, we all well know Labeouf—an accused abuser and admitted “pleasure-seeking, selfish, self-centered, dishonest, inconsiderate, fearful human being”—has had his fair share of controversies in the last decade. Why, however, he felt the Catholic church was the proper place to absolve him of such was reportedly due to his role in Abel Ferrara’s film, Padre Pio, where he portrayed the 20th-century Italian priest, Francesco Forgione. While researching for the part, Labeouf frequented Old Mission Santa Inés Parish in Solvang, California. There, the formerly agnostic actor found God, I guess.

“His decision to fully enter the Church is a testament to his sincere desire to grow in his relationship with God and live out the Gospel values,” the friars’ statement continued. And because getting confirmed wasn’t enough for Labeouf, according to his sponsor, he’s now considering becoming a deacon “sometime in the future.”

“He just spontaneously said, ‘I want to become a deacon,’ and he still feels that way,” Capuchin friar Brother Alexander Rodriguez told the Catholic News Agency. Bless his heart???

“I fucked up bad,” LaBeouf admitted in a 2022 interview, indirectly referencing abuse allegations from his former girlfriend, FKA twigs. “Like crash and burn type shit. [I] hurt a lot of people, and I’m fully aware of that. And I’m going to owe for the rest of my life.”

To be fair, historically speaking, the Catholic church has been just the place for men who owe people an awful lot.

Labeouf’s representatives did not immediately respond to Jezebel’s request for comment, nor inquiries as to what his confirmation name was (JK about the latter).
