As soon as I heard the news that the Riverdale team were taking on Sabrina the Teenage Witch, I joked that it would be grim and sexy as hell. And it’s true!
Variety reports that what’s good for the warlock is good for the witch. Warner Brothers is developing a reboot of the series for the 2018-19 season that will probably not feature any adorable, busted animatronic cats or zany hijinks. It’s going to be dark:
The potential series would be based on the Archie Comics series “Chilling Adventures of Sabrina,” which reimagines the origin and adventures of Sabrina as a dark coming-of-age story that traffics in horror, the occult, and witchcraft. The series is described as being tonally in the vein of horror classics like “Rosemary’s Baby” and “The Exorcist,” and will see Sabrina wrestling to reconcile her dual nature as a half-witch, half-mortal while standing against the evil forces that threaten her, her family, and the daylight world humans inhabit.
That sounds like a far cry from the pointing magic Melissa Joan Hart displayed in the late nineties and early aughts, but cyclical fashion promises characters will more or less be dressed the same.
Chief creative officer of Archie Comics, Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa, will be serving as writer and executive producer on what is now titled Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, after the Archie-spin off comic series. Riverdale director Lee Toland Krieger will also be executive producing, along with Greg Berlanti, Sarah Schechter, and Jon Goldwater, who are all also attached to Riverdale. If the series gets a full order it’ll be a “companion” piece to Archie’s sexy storyline, and you know what that means: magic will soon be sparking in a booth at Pop’s Diner.
