Remy Ma Brings Out Fellow Women Rappers During Summer Jam Set, Tears Into Nicki Minaj Again

Latest

The Nicki Minaj/Remy Ma beef is still cooking, and after almost four months it’s now dry as hell. It was hard to believe that it was still happening last week when it was revealed that Nicki took pointed shots at Remy in her guest verse on 2 Chainz’s “Realize” (meanwhile, Remy spoke more generally of beef in her riff on Future’s “Mask Off”), but I’m starting to think that this is just the way things are now and these rappers will continue to publicly spar until the planet overheats and we all die of thirst.

On Sunday, Remy performed at Hot 97’s Summer Jam at the MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey. During her set, she brought out a slew of her peers, veterans and newcomers alike. Queen Latifah, Lil’ Kim, the Lady of Rage, Monie Love, MC Lyte, Young M.A, and Cardi B all took the stage as various songs of theirs played. In the spirit of unity, here’s Latifah and Remy doing a bit of Latifah’s 1993 hit “U.N.I.T.Y.”:

And here’s a clip of Young M.A doing her 2016 hit “OOOUUU”:

And then, before Remy’s peers could even leave the stage, the introduction of Remy’s infamous Nicki Minaj dis track “SHEther” sounded:

And Remy preceded to tear into Nicki all over again in front of a giant screen that projected Minaj-mocking memes:

How to interpret this display in which Remy Ma’s solidarity and acrimony overlapped so publicly? Was she mean-girling Nicki by showing just how big her squad is before tearing into her rival yet again? Was she making a more nuanced statement on her high regard for other women in her industry vis a vis what she thinks of Nicki, a woman in her industry? Is it mere multi-pronged spectacle (Remy bringing a ton of female rappers onstage was bound to get press, as was her performing of “SHEther,” so why not just do both?).

Regardless, it seems awfully telling that Remy performed in front of images of Nicki that were many times her size. Even in her physical absence, Nicki took up a huge amount of space during this performance.
