Call it the curse of the televised vow renewal: Shannon and David Beador of the Real Housewives of Orange County have separated after 17 years of marriage.

Since joining the cast of Orange County in Season 9, Shannon has publicly aired the troubles in her marriage, culminating in the Season 10 reveal that David had been having an affair. After marriage counseling (also televised), the couple renewed their vows in 2016 and seemed on the path to healing until it came out that David has was once arrested for spousal battery, charges Shannon told viewers were taken out of context and blown out of proportion. The pair has three daughters.

Shannon first spoke about the separation while filming the Orange County Season 12 reunion this week, and released the following statement to People:

“It’s heartbreaking for me and my daughters that this is the road that had to be taken but it’s the only way. I felt alone in my marriage. You can do what you can to keep your family together, but you have to have willing parties. You need two people to make a marriage work, and that just wasn’t happening in our relationship.”

I would go one further and say that it is:

The Curse of a Vow Renewal

Everyone who does one seems like they are desperately close to a divorce, and they probably should have saved the money spent on the thirst-fest to pay the divorce attorney. At least the televised version probably has everything spon-conned, so they aren’t wasting their own money? The IRL versions that I’ve had the misfortune of being involved with haven’t come off well or ended well IMHO.
