Meanwhile, elsewhere in the America that Elton John doesn’t love anymore: DADT is potentially about to be repealed (or at least forced to not exist anymore), gay marriage is a reality in several states and in DC, there’s more positive representation of gays in the media through shows like “Modern Family,” many celebrities are now openly homosexual – Ellen & Portia immediately spring to mind as a popular TV host and a sex symbol actress – and the rumors of potential homosexuality haven’t affected other celebs’ popularity (Ryan Seacrest, Anderson Cooper) one bit.

Yeah, it’s easy to listen to the bloaviated screeds coming from religious and right-wing figures and get depressed. I’ve likened the religious/right wing anger to be akin to the vicious lashes of a dying snake – simply striking out in many different directions, hoping to latch on to something. The Old White Guy power structure has been uprooted, and they’re going to fight like hell to keep what they’ve still got, often lashing out at the vulnerable. And they’re going to blame anybody who doesn’t fit in their narrow world view…and they’ve still got plenty of voices that can yell.

That’s why I think that given how depressing things may be, the positive gains made in the past 30 years need to be embraced that much more.
