Rand Paul Calls Out Jeb Bush, Former Rich-Kid Weed Smoker, for Marijuana Hypocrisy

On Thursday, Rand Paul discussed his stance on weed, also known as the one position on which he isn’t totally bananas. In a talk, Paul called out Jeb Bush for flagrant rich-kid hypocrisy: namely, the former Florida governor’s admission that he had smoked marijuana while a student at Phillips Academy is exactly why drug laws need to be changed.

“He didn’t go to jail. Why? Because he was rich, he was elite, and he was going to a very special school,” Paul said in a speech at the University of Nevada-Reno.

“What I do have a problem with is he still wants to put kids in jail for marijuana. What I was upset with Jeb Bush was his hypocrisy,” Paul said. “If a white kid is caught with it, and they’re from a well-to-do family, they get a good lawyer and they don’t go to jail.”

Currently in Florida, the possession of less than 20 grams of marijuana is a misdemeanor punishable by one year in jail, while anything more than that is a felony punishable by at least 3-5 years in prison.

During the GOP debate on Wednesday evening, Bush laid out his vague position on the matter:

“We have a serious epidemic of drugs that goes way beyond marijuana,” he said. “If you look at the problem of drugs in our society today, it’s a serious problem… It is appropriate for the government to play a consistent role to be able to provide more treatment, more prevention.”
