Octogenarian Drives Into Pond, Smokes Pipe in Sinking Car Awaiting Rescue

Sometimes you drive into a pond. It happens. When you do drive into a pond, really the only course of action is to follow the example of one elderly British man, who sat in his sinking car and lit his pipe to wait for the ambulance service.

The Birmingham Mail shares the tale of this anonymous inspiration to us all. He’d gone to Oakham Farm Pools to go fishing, but found himself in one of their ponds, instead. He did not panic, because panic is the enemy of survival. “After his car ended up in the water, he smoked his pipe and chatted to the farmer who went into the lake in his waders,” said a spokesperson for the West Midlands Ambulance Service. “He wasn’t hurt or even cold but ambulance crews removed his clothing to ensure he didn’t get cold and he was driven home in the ambulance.”
