North Dakota's State Senate Passes Bill Aiming to Make Abortion Illegal

Latest

Ugh, North Dakota! You don’t even have a mountain with president faces on it, why are you getting so high and mighty? Keep this up and we’ll attach you to Florida and cut your ass off! (It could work.) (?)

Earlier today, North Dakota’s State Senate passed two bills that, if approved by voters, will make it harder for women in the worst state to be a woman to get vital women’s health care. Ughhh.

The first bill is the Personhood Constitutional Amendment initiative that would amend the state’s constitution to give legal rights and protections to human embryos. Obviously, this would effectively outlaw abortion because the woman has fewer rights than the fertilized egg inside of her. It’s expected to pass the House, and when it does, voters will decide on in during the 2014 elections.

“We are intending that it be a direct challenge to Roe v. Wade, since Scalia said that the Supreme Court is waiting for states to raise a case,” state Sen. Margaret Sitte (R), the sponsor of the personhood initiative.

The other bill is aimed at shutting down North Dakota’s sole abortion clinic, the Red River Women’s Clinic in Fargo, by requiring abortion doctors to have admitting privileges at a local hospital. This is the exact same bullshit currently going down in Mississippi. Terribly, all hospitals near the Jackson clinic are refusing the applications of doctors who perform abortions. Awful. When this passes the House (likely), it will also go to vote in 2014.

Both Planned Parenthood and the North Dakota Democratic Party are understandably upset and freaked out, with NDDP communications director Rania Batrice saying “It’s like a bad episode of the twilight zone.”
