She’s Gotta Have It, a ten-part Netflix update on Spike Lee’s original 1986 film, isn’t due out until November, and it’s still a toss-up whether it will address the topic of female sexuality more adroitly this time around. Only time will tell on that one, but Netflix did release some clips revealing the new cast.

Shots Fired regular DeWanda Wise will be leading the series as protagonist Nola Darling, and will be joined by Hamilton star Anthony Ramos as Mars Blackmon (originally played by Lee).

She’s Gotta Have It the Netflix Original Series from Academy Award Nominated Director SPIKE LEE is a 10-episode contemporary update of Lee’s 1986 revolutionary debut film. Starring DeWanda Wise (Shots Fired) in the central role of Nola Darling, a Brooklyn-based artist in her late twenties struggling to define herself and divide her time amongst her Friends, her Job and her Three Lovers: Greer Childs played by Cleo Anthony (Divergent), Jamie Overstreet played by Lyriq Bent (The Book of Negroes), and Mars Blackmon played by Hamilton alum Anthony Ramos. Chyna Layne (Precious) and Ilfenesh Hadeara (Baywatch), Margot Bingham (Barbershop: The Next Cut), Sydney Morton (Love, New York), and Joie Lee (Do The Right Thing) also star. Lee directs all 10 episodes of the series, he created and produced the show.

As Clover Hope pointed out when the series was announced last September, Lee made a serious misstep with the scene in which Darling was raped by one of her partners. Lee has since acknowledged the fuck-up, but there’s no doubt that he’d be wise to seek lots and lots of female input this time around:

There’s no edict that says men absolutely can’t write about the female experience, but given that Lee already got his shot in 1986 with this storyline and ended up with something problematic, it would’ve been far more audacious and interesting if he hired a woman director and/or writer to handle this.

The series will be co-produced by Lee’s wife, Tonya Lewis Lee, and according to IMDB, a solid percentage of the listed writers are women. We’ll see how it goes.
