The divine genius of Hollywood strikes again: Natalie Portman (Thor; No Strings Attached) will play Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg in the upcoming biopic On the Basis of Sex. Deadline Hollywood has described the project as “classy,” and says that it’ll track Ginsburg’s various struggles for equality throughout the course of her career.

This casting makes our hearts hurt a little bit, and I’m sure you know why, so say it along with me while you glower into your browsers at home: if this was a biopic about Justice Antonin Scalia or Justice John Roberts, they wouldn’t need to hire one of the world’s most famous and beautiful actors to generate interest in the film. Indeed, there’s a biopic in works about Justice Clarence Thomas and he is, surprise, not being played by Jayden Smith! He is being played Dadbod-Haver Wendell Pierce.

Also?? I don’t really think Natalie Portman is that great of an actress?? But whatever, who am I? What do I know? Great news for obscenely beautiful women and Ruth Bader Ginsburg fans all over the world.

They got an incredibly intelligent and thoughtful Jewish woman to play an incredibly intelligent and thoughtful Jewish woman. Sounds pretty perfect to me.

It’s also a bit of a false equivalency. The Clarence Thomas film is about the Anita Hill hearings; this one is about celebrating RBG’s work. You get a gorgeous and sympathetic person to play a clear protagonist, not the person who is under a stormcloud, to put it mildly.
