Meryl Streep, Freida Pinto Attend US Premiere of Banned India Rape Doc

Despite being banned in India, the documentary India’s Daughter made its premiere in the United States last night at Baruch College in New York City, attended by none other than Freida Pinto and Meryl Streep, who led the evening with a candlelight vigil.

Via AP Online:

“Tonight we light these candles to honor the value and the work of Jyoti Singh’s short, promising life,” Streep said. “She was India’s daughter. Tonight she’s our daughter too.”

Freida Pinto also spoke about the challenges faced by women not only in India, but worldwide:

“This is not just an India problem; this is a problem that inflicts almost every country in the world,” Pinto said. “There’s not a single country in 2015 that is free of sexual violence against women.”
