Good morning! Meghan Markle is pregnant. It’s official, it’s confirmed, and they’re past the three-month mark.
Kensington Palace confirmed the news on Twitter, announcing that, “Their Royal Highnesses The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are very pleased to announce that The Duchess of Sussex is expecting a baby in the Spring of 2019.” I can now admit that my first thought upon seeing their arrival at Princess Eugenie’s wedding was: Wow, that would be a very cute maternity ensemble, and also, it makes her look very pregnant. I immediately chastised myself for having let the royal beat turn me into somebody so sees royal babies where there’s just a weird shadow.
But I wasn’t the only one who noticed, either, and suspicion apparently intensified as the pair got off the plane in Australia, where they are setting off a big royal tour. News.com.au reported:
A source on-board the flight told news.com.au the couple appeared to be “in good spirits” during the flight. But as the Duke and Duchess of Sussex walked out of Sydney airport holding hands and flanked by security, it was two purple folders carried by Meghan, that caught the attention of onlookers.
Meghan walked to a waiting car holding the folders in her right arm, concealing a large section of her body. It was considered by some as an unusual move in that members of the royal family are not typically seen carrying stationery on official engagements or tours. The prince gave a thumbs-up to bystanders as Meghan, wearing skinny black pants and a black, burgundy trimmed coat, smiled, and slipped into car. The sighting set social media alight.
That’s a trick straight out of Scandal when Kerry Washington was pregnant but Olivia Pope wasn’t:
Presumably since they’re about to be photographed a million times a day from every angle imaginable, they figured time to just go ahead and announce, rather than opting for increasingly more elaborate ruses. Sincere congrats to Harry and Meghan on keeping it under wraps for long enough that they didn’t upstage Eugenie’s wedding. Although apparently they did tell some family members, and Harper’s Bazaar has already plucked out a moment they think the pair may have told Princess Anne on camera at St. George’s Chapel.
Let the royal baby news cycle commence.
