Maggie Smith Is Giving Downton Abbey One More Season

Gather ye razor-sharp witticisms while ye may, because it sounds like Maggie Smith is leaving Downton Abbey after next season.

I assume that’s because the Dowager Countess has decided to wash her hands of her family and their affairs and will sail off into the sunset for somewhere more adventurous. Borneo, perhaps?

That’s according to The Hollywood Reporter, picking up her remarks in an interview with the Sunday Times. There’ve been rumors the show will wrap after six seasons, but it seems Smith is done regardless. “They say this is the last one, and I can’t see how it could go on,” she told the paper. “I mean, I certainly can’t keep going… To my knowledge, I must be 110 by now. We’re into the late 1920s.” (She also took the opportunity to complain about being cornered for selfies. Leave the woman alone, for God’s sake.)

However, Smith has no immediate plans to retire, because she is an unstoppable force of nature.
