Buried in Cardi B’s historic 10-part dunk on Nicki Minaj (via Instagram posts Monday night) is a note she made about Minaj’s new song with British girl group Little Mix, titled “Woman Like Me.” Cardi claimed that because she stayed in her lane and didn’t hop on the clubby pop song when it was allegedly offered to her, producers then shopped it around and that’s how it ended up going to Minaj. And now Little Mix is part of this narrative.
“That ‘Woman Like Me’ record? Yeah, I had to decline it because I’m doing a lot of pop records, so I can’t, you know, over-exaggerate myself. But that came to me first, and then they give it to you,” Cardi stated in one of her videos.
This is goods new for Minaj, Cardi further claimed. “You out here tryna say that I’m tryna stop your bag, right? But I’m actually helping you get a bag!” Not so fast, say the four girls from London who hold both Minaj and Cardi in high regard and who just want to set the record straight about whom they would prefer to work with if they absolutely had to choose.
They have the facts and they’re voting Nicki.
Yes, Little Mix is disputing that Cardi was approached first.
“Both were approached by our label to work with us on Woman Like Me, Nicki then Cardi,” they wrote in a tweet. “We went with Nicki because like we’ve said over and over for years, it’s been a dream of ours to work with her since the beginning. We have nothing but love and positivity for both Nicki and Cardi.” On Instagram, they also posted an image that read “Sorry Cardi hun but this is the T,” and then has the tea emoji. “We’ve always wanted the queen.”
I have some questions, like: If Minaj was offered the song first, why take it to Cardi B at all? Wouldn’t Cardi have gotten upset when the offer was rescinded? If Little Mix has nothing but love and respect for both of these rappers, why make the weird Instagram post? Why is this happening? Suffice to say, Little Mix wants us to believe this smoothed-over version of events, and why exactly, I’m not sure, but it’s all a “little” messy.
Congrats to Little Mix on the song, and on for officially being in the mix. Now, could all the parties involved take a long social media break?
