In the face of a week full of Very Bad Things, let us direct our attention to something positive, like these pictures of Lupita Nyong’o radiating at the London Film Festival premiere of her latest, The Queen of Katwe.
That top is not a dress, plebes. It’s a crop top. It matches her head wrap and her earrings, and those insane high-waisted baby blue pants and it’s all by Rosie Assouline, darlings. Here she is with her co-star, David Oyelowo. They both look great, if you ask me!
The Queen of Katwe is the story of Phiona Mutesi (Madina Nalwanga), a pre-teen living in a Ugandan shanty-town who discovers that she has a knack for chess. Chess! Lupita plays Phiona’s mother, in what is her “live action role” since 12 Years A Slave. Surely you remember the last time Lupita was on film. She played “Maz Kanata,” a tiny, 1000 year old alien pirate with goggles for eyes who was in the last Star Wars movie for about ten minutes, tops. Rude!
As the Guardianrightfully notes, a movie about chess has the potential to be extraordinarily boring; if you don’t know the rules and are unfamiliar with the game, watching two people frown at a game board, thinking inscrutable thoughts about moves and knights and rooks has the potential to be very boring. But, this is a Disney movie, so beware of excessive feelings and schmaltz. It is directed by Mira Nair, so at least there’s that. Here’s a trailer, if you’re so inclined.
