I think the reason that everyone is siding with him may be influenced by sexism but it also has a lot to do with the fact that she doesn't come across as an especially likable person.

My personal opinion is that, since both of their names were called, he should have waited for her and they should have gone up to the stage together. I understand that they weren't getting along or whatever it is but I think there's a little thing called graciousness that takes precedence in situations like this.
