Kellyanne Conway Hummed a Taylor Swift Song on Fox News Because Only Bad Things Happen Now

Taylor Swift’s new pivot to politics has stoked the ire of the White House, which put out a press statement reiterating the Trump Administration’s rejection of the Equality Act after Swift called for its support at Monday night’s MTV Video Music Awards. Donald Trump has not yet tweeted about it (give it time), but Kellyanne Conway did address the Swiftian situation on Fox News on Tuesday night. It was… something.

Variety reports that Conway, while doing her usual spin on Swift and the Equality Act for Fox News’s Martha MacCallum, decided it would be cute to sing some of “You Need to Calm Down” in order to, I don’t know, prove some point? Get people to blog about it? (It worked? Kill me?)

“If you say it on the street, that’s a knockout / If you put it in a tweet, that’s a cop-out,” Conway sang. “I love that! I mean, that basically is Washington in a nutshell.”

Conway, who works for a man who literally makes policy decisions via Twitter, seemed intent on mocking Swift’s pretty extensive fanbase—ironic, since not that long ago the MAGA white supremacist crowd celebrated Swift, if baselessly.

“I would love to ask her audience if they even know what that is, [what] the Equality Act is and isn’t,” Conway said. “She’s welcome to her opinion. I can tell you there’s a lot of poison pills in it.”

Conway did not bother to specify what those “poison pills” were, but went on to claim that the bill could “harm other people.” Conservatives have been trying to spin the bill—an anti-discrimination law that would grant LGBTQ people protections in employment, housing, and education—as an assault on “religious freedom.”
