Katy Perry Is Amy Heckerling's Dream Pick to Play Cher in the Clueless Musical

Latest

Earlier this year, director Amy Heckerling revealed plans to write a musical based on her 1995 film, Clueless. The stage version of the iconic teenage comedy is on its way to reality, but Heckerling is still looking for the ultimate Cher Horowitz.

While Alicia Silverstone left some big Jimmy Choos to fill, Heckerling does have a particular pop star in mind to play the beloved Beverly Hills teen— Katy Perry. In 2014, the singer expressed interest in the role herself.

“I love Katy Perry,” Heckerling told Vulture. “But you never know what will happen, she has a whole big schedule. It was like, ‘I love it, I wish I could do it.’“ Maybe now that Perry’s 17 month-long Prismatic World Tour has ended, she’ll make some time for a different kind of stage.

Heckerling hasn’t released details of the musical numbers yet, but she previously said it was a jukebox musical, meaning that the songs would already be known. And if the movie’s gold-certified soundtrack is any inclination, we should expect some pretty good tunes. “I don’t think you will go, ‘Oh, it’s just karaoke to the movie, or it is an entirely different animal.’ It is true to the movie, but it sings, hopefully.”

Rock of Ages’ Kristin Hanggi is on board to direct, and the film’s original costume designer, Mona May, will dress Cher and her crew once again.
