Kacey Musgraves Says Her New Album Golden Hour Is 'Trippy'

The lovable stoner country queen Kacey Musgraves is readying her follow-up to 2015’s Pageant Material and 2016’s A Very Kacey Christmas, announcing that her new album—out early next year—is called Golden Hour.

In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Musgraves said that the album is “trippy,” drawing inspiration from artists like the Bee Gees, Sade, and Neil Young. She says the writing will be a lot more direct, leading with her “heart first.”

Musgraves, who recently got married in a very beautiful ceremony that I followed avidly on Instagram, says there will definitely be more love songs on the new album. “I have a lot more love songs this time around, and I’ve never been one to write a love song and really feel it,” she said. “That probably sounds like the most depressing thing ever.” And Golden Hour will explore all the different sides to her personality, she says:

I was thinking about how there are different masks that we wear that represent different sides of us. None of the masks are solely us, but they’re all us. On this record, there’s the lonely girl, the blissful girl, the new wife, the girl that’s missing her mom, the angry girl, the sarcastic girl, the ‘60s-sequined Cruella de Vil with the beehive, the shy girl, the life of the party, the winner, the loser — they’re all characters on this record. None of them alone are me, but the golden hour is when they all come together and you see me as a whole.

Oh, and she recorded the album in the studio above Sheryl Crow’s horse stable. “We ended up talking about reincarnation one night and getting so heady,” she said. “I was like, ‘This is amazing!’ It set the tone.” Well, if that doesn’t sound like a Grammy winner!
