Remember Are You Afraid of the Dark? Do you also remember watching it almost exclusively while babysitting, tucking the tots into bed before curling up on a stranger’s couch to let the Midnight Society scare the absolute crap out of you with their impossible array of deranged clowns and haunted dolls? Are you also kind of scaring yourself right now thinking about it, even though you are a capable adult with a flexible credit line and relatively groomed cuticles who does not turn on all the lights in a panic when the radiator makes an unfamiliar shriek? Me neither!
Good news for us, then: Paramount Players is moving forward with a film adaptation of the beloved and not at all terrifying show, to be penned by Gary Dauberman, who you also know as not scaring us half to death with It.
“The show is about the shared experience of telling stories — especially scary ones. We’re going to celebrate that with this movie and honor the darker, scarier tone of the show, which was really groundbreaking for Nickelodeon at the time. I hope the Midnight Society approves,” Dauberman told The Hollywood Reporter.
Oh, darker and scarier you say? Do bring it on, because I am not wearing the cat as a blanket to protect me from an unknown sound outside my window, nor am I convinced a potted plant just moved a half inch to the left on its own.
