i've done quite a bit of research on the DRC's visual culture and it makes me sick to my stomach that these women are probably investing so much time and effort in their hairstyles to not just have some sort of connection to their rich cultural past but probably to just focus on something which is beautiful and makes them feel human. not every woman in the DRC is raped or loses someone in their family to the ongoing violence but these hairstyles no doubt gives them a strong sense of identity, history and perseverance. i love these women and the hope they exhibit. i hope more positive stories emerge from this beautiful country.
