In Gerard Way's Apocalyptic Netflix Show Umbrella Academy, Mary J. Blige Is a Time-Traveling Assassin

Excuse me as I lay all of the cards on the table here: a Netflix adaptation of the comic series Umbrella Academy, written by My Chemical Romance’s Gerard Way and starring Mary J. Blige as a time-traveling assassin is like a mad-libs of all of my pop culture interests and others I did not know I had until right now. A trailer for the upcoming show dropped over the weekend, and the cast consists of Ellen Page, Tom Hopper, and Robert Sheehan.

The Umbrella Academy begins with a supernatural premise. On a random day in 1989, 43 babies are born to women who, until their deliveries, were not pregnant. All of these children possess superhuman abilities of varying kinds (extremely X-Men-like), which sparks the interest of an eccentric rich dude who adopts six of the kids and dubs them “the Umbrella Academy.” As time goes on, they face an impending apocalypse with a deadline of eight days to learn how to stop it.

As Indiewire reports, the series was created for television by Steve Blackman (Legion, Fargo) and will premiere on Netflix on February 15, 2019. A real Valentine’s Day treat for me.
