I'm Not Sure Why This Video of Mary Berry Playing Drums With Rick Astley Exists, but Hey

Latest

If Book Club is my personal Avengers: Infinity War, then this video of former Great British Bake Off judge Mary Berry playing drums for Rick Astley at the U.K.’s Camp Bestival is my Concert for Bangladesh, minus the do-gooding and George Harrison.

According to the BBC, the 83-year-old Berry joined Astley, of Rickroll fame, onstage Friday night at the weekend-long festival in Dorset. There is video evidence, which you can see here:

It is incredibly unclear why and how the United Kingdom’s greatest frangipane tart-maker ended up being part of Astley’s performance, but some Twitter sleuthing suggests the following timeline.

First, at 10:43 a.m. on Friday, Astley tweeted a photo of himself with Berry, alongside the caption, “Look who I just bumped into! The wonderful Mary Berry!” It is unclear whether this was a chance meeting or a planned encounter.

Then, at some indeterminate period later that day, festival organizer Rob da Bank spotted Astley showing Berry the skins during rehearsal.

And then….showtime.

I am unfamiliar with the track Berry’s contributing to, since it’s not “Never Gonna Give You Up,” whose video currently has 460,432,064 views on YouTube, approximately half of which were unintentional. Memes get results!!!! Anyway, Berry’s concert cameo does NOT make up for the fact that she is no longer on The Great British Bake Off, having departed in 2016 alongside beloved hosts Sue Perkins and Mel Giedroyc when the show moved from the BBC to Channel 4.

Though I have been told the Channel 4 iteration is “fun,” I am loyal only to the Crown of Berry, and not even Richmond from The IT Crowd can persuade me to defect.
