Contestants on shows like Naked and Afraid and Dating Naked may have their bods on full display as the show is taping, but someone behind the scenes is responsible for blurring all the boobs and penises for the network after the fact.
Entertainment Tonight aired a fun segment earlier this week about how the censorship happens on Naked and Afraid (a show about people who are both naked and afraid), speaking to the graphic artists whose job it is to manipulate every frame of footage and make the blurring look unobtrusive. The editing takes a week per episode.
“The general mandate is to make the blurs look as natural as possible and still cover up as much as possible,” says Erin Gavin, the show’s graphics supervisor. “You always have to keep a look out ’cause things’ll pop out or there’s always the side boob, if you will.”
It’s okay to show ass in the episodes, though. Butts aren’t sacred, according to executive producer Steve Rankin, who says, “We are allowed to show things like butt and butt crack.”
