Presidential candidate Herman Cain just announced via live video feed that he will not be continuing his campaign in the wake of accusations that he conducted a 13-year extramarital affair.

Today's barbeque-cooking and country music-playing event was initially scheduled to be the ribbon-cutting for Cain's national headquarters, but between recent allegations of multiple infidelities and comments from Cain that he would be "reassessing" his political plans, there has been a lot of speculation that he would be dropping out of the race. Cain says:

"As of today, with a lot of prayer and soul searching, I am suspending my presidential campaign. I am suspending my presidential campaign because of the continued distraction, the continued hurt . . . on me, on my family, not because we are not fighters, not because I am not a fighter."

One thing really upsets me about this:

Several women came out complaining about sexual harassment at work, meaning that he repeatedly imposed unwanted sexual advances, gestures or suggestions on women, discriminating against them in where they worked, a showing a level of at least sexism and at worse serious misogyny, but that didn't stop his campaign.

He waved that off as lying women who are looking to be upset by just the way men are, amirite?! And while that tactic didn't completely work, for the most part he was able to keep on with this campaign.

It's when a woman steps forward and says she had a consensual, but extramarital, relationship with him, now it's full stop, ohmygod, what will we do??? And he suspends his campaign.

I don't actually care if candidates cheat on their spouses, unless they have as part of their platform family values and keeping the nuclear family together and sacred or whatever. I really have an issue with a candidate who shows that he doesn't respect women enough to treat them decently at their jobs, and who takes advantage of his position of power in a company to subject them to sexual harassment.

I have a huge issue with the fact that unlawful behavior like sexual harassment is not going to stop a presidential campaign, but a consensual extramarital affair will.
