Hapless Couple Has No Idea Maldivian Wedding Officiant Is Spewing Abuse At Them

When a Western couple renewed their vows at a hotel in the Maldives, they were in fact being told they were “swine” and “infidels.” It wasn’t until people saw the video that the foul-mouthed penny dropped…

The hapless unidentified couple, in bridal finery, think they’re renewing their vows in the Dhivehi language. Instead, the officiant “reads” from unemployment contracts and says, among other things,

Your marriage is not a valid one. You are not the kind of people who can have a valid marriage. One of you is an infidel. The other, too, is an infidel – and we have reason to believe – an atheist, who does not even believe in an infidel religion…You fornicate and make a lot of children. You drink and you eat pork. Most of the children that you have are marked with spots and blemishes. These children that you have are bastards.

And let’s not forget the references to bestiality, VD, the bride’s breasts and “frequent fornication by homosexuals.” The cost was $1,300.

The incident is a concern to tourism officials, since it’s the main industry of the Maldives. Says Deputy Tourism Minister Ismail Yasir to the BBC, “We are embarrassed as well, and very outraged…I am sure almost all Maldivians are aware that tourism is the main industry in the Maldives and is very important.” He adds, “We would like to assure everyone who would like to come to Maldives that we will take such incidents seriously and we will take action…We don’t want for such incidents to be characterized as normal in the Maldives and I am sure it is not so.” The “officiant” is being investigated by police. However, the hotel manager says, “The man had used filthy language. Otherwise the ceremony was OK.”

Lessons learned: bring an interpreter, don’t post videos to YouTube, and never, ever let this guy give you a tattoo.
