Gucci has released their campaign for Fall Winter 2017 and it honestly looks like the high-fashion version of something you’d watch on Mystery Science Theater 3000. Alessandro Michele’s reign of bonkers vintage obsession continues.
The campaign’s launch page explains that, “Surreal, psychedelic outer space landscapes and trippy retro-futurist spaceship interiors create wild settings. For the Fall Winter 2017 campaign shot by Glen Luchford, Creative Director Alessandro Michele was inspired by the sci-fi genre of the 1950s and 60s, including the iconic TV program Star Trek.” And yes, Star Trek is the most obvious influence. The campaign actually credits CBS for the borrowed elements, like the iconic transporter room. This is the most obvious feature of the shots released and available to peruse in full at Tom & Lorenzo.
But to describe this campaign as simply Star Trek fails to do justice to the level of commitment to the concept that Gucci has displayed here. You’ve also got your flying saucer, seen above. You’ve got your swamp monster.
You’ve got your giant stop-motion T-Rex that bears no resemblance to the historical dinosaur.
Normally you’d expect fashion dabbling in genre to be slapdash, with maybe one fairly obvious reference. But this shit genuinely looks like some long-forgotten b-movie. I mean, this alien looks like he wandered out of some early ’70s porno producer’s attempt to go legit with a low-budget sci-fi adventure. That alien wants to sex you.
Now, am I falling all over myself to actually buy any of this? Absolutely not. If I’m going to purchase galactic high-fashion, it will only be things vetted by Rihanna. However, I do encourage you to enjoy this short film.
