Fashion's Latest Effort To Make Gulf Oil Spill Irresistibly Chic

Is a line of shoes slicked with black “oil” called Gulf Coast Cleanup an earnest idea gone wrong, or intentional provocation? If your company is called Bed|Stü — an entirely unnecessarily umlautification of a historic Brooklyn neighborhood — I’m suspicious.

According to Esquire, proceeds from the shoes will go to the World Wildlife Federation. Still, is there any reason why a charity collection has to be so literal? It’s not like Livestrong bracelets are made to look like tumors.

The real shame here is that these came out too late for Vogue Italia to include them in its ill-advised fashion shoot. Two makes a trend!
