The Pirelli Calendar has long been known for its exclusive, seductive pictures of the world’s top models, shot by the world’s best photographers, as was celebrated last year in a book on the calendar’s 50-plus years of production. While the 2016 calendar was expected to be much of the same, it appears that this year, non-models in a wide age range have been photographed, by Annie Leibovitz no less.
Pirelli apparently started shooting the project in May, which they call a “radical and inspirational departure from previous years” and “a calendar of our time.” As you can see in the teaser video on The Cut, and as i-D points out, Serena Williams, Patti Smith, Tavi Gevinson, Yoko Ono, Ava DuVernay and Fran Lebowitz, as well as maybe Chita Rivera? and others will be featured. Several of them, it’s worth noting, have previously been photographed by Leibovitz for other projects.
Williams is the only one to have confirmed her inclusion in the calendar, which Pirelli double-confirmed.

In previous years, Pirelli has made headlines for including plus size models and men, but from what we can see of the photos so far, the shoot seems to include decidedly less skin than the NSFW calendars they’re known for. Nudity just isn’t exciting enough anymore, I guess.
