Duke University Fraternity Suspended After Rape Allegation

Latest

The Alpha Delta Phi fraternity at Duke University has been suspended, following an allegation from a female student that she was raped at party held at their off-campus house earlier this month. The woman told Durham police she passed out after being given a hot chocolate, and awoke the next morning with no underwear, wearing a shirt she didn’t recognize.

WRAL reports that the woman told police the incident occurred on the night of January 8. In an affidavit, the woman told police she had one mixed drink at the party and was then served the hot chocolate. After drinking it, she lost consciousness. Just before, she told police, she remembers refusing to let a fraternity remember lead her to his room upstairs. When she woke up the next afternoon, according to CBS, who also obtained the affidavit, she had on the unfamiliar shirt and her cellphone was broken. Her leggings were on the ground next to her bed and appeared to be torn.

The affidavit also says that the victim received two text messages, the first of which read, “Yo!” The second said, “Ha, ha, you went back with a kid I know …. you’re screwed.”

In a brief statement, Duke said it has placed Alpha Delta Phi on “interim suspension” while the allegation is being investigated. A spokesperson for Alpha Delta’s national office told WNCN they are “cooperating fully” with the investigation.

Elsewhere in the fratverse, three Michigan fraternities are accused of causing $50,000 in damages to two ski resorts. The damages at one resort reportedly involved “broken walls and felled ceiling tiles around the hotel,” while the damages at the other are unspecified. Isn’t it truly a great day when all a frat is accused of is a little light criminal mischief?
