Dogs Talk, Walk, And Dance In Fantastic Film From 1930

And the award for Wackiest Movie In Which Animals Act Like Humans goes to The Dogway Melody, a completely-real-and-serious film from MGM that came out in 1930. It’s a spoof on 1929’s The Broadway Melody, a film you’ve probably never heard of but won an Academy Award, in which two vaudeville players arrive on Broadway to make their dreams come true. IMDb summarizes it as such:
Harriet and Queenie Mahoney, a vaudeville act, come to Broadway, where their friend Eddie Kerns needs them for his number in one of Francis Zanfield’s shows. Eddie was in love with Harriet, but when he meets Queenie, he falls in love to her, but she is courted by Jock Warriner, a member of the New Yorker high society. It takes a while till Queenie recognizes, that she is for Jock nothing more than a toy, and it also takes a while till Harriet recognizes, that Eddie is in love with Queenie.
Okay! Now swap all of those characters for real-life dogs who can apparently dance, walk on their hind legs, and whose moving lips have been dubbed over in English. I don’t even want to think about how, exactly, they got these dogs to move their mouths at the right time, walk around on two legs, and dance together in unison. But oh, is it a joy to see these adorable pups dressed in fancy outfits and act like humans! I could watch it all day.
